How to build it
Oklahoma’s order: put a sinker on the line, then a stopper, then a barrel swivel, and attach a hook on a leader to the swivel. Oregon describes the same thing as a bullet weight, a bead and then a swivel about 12 to 18 inches above a Texas-rigged lure (see the Texas rig). Virginia’s panfish version uses a sliding bullet or egg sinker of 1/8 to 3/8 ounce ahead of a barrel swivel and bead, then an 18 to 36 inch leader with the lure tied on. Virginia also suggests one large round split shot ahead of the offering as an alternative.
| Source | Leader length |
|---|---|
| Oklahoma DWC | 12–24 in |
| Oregon ODFW | about 12–18 in |
| Virginia DWR (panfish) | 18–36 in |
The sliding sinker-and-swivel layout is the same one used in the fish finder rig, where an egg sinker slides on the line above a swivel.
How it fishes
The weight drags across the bottom while the bait floats a foot or two off it, usually a better strike zone (Oklahoma). Oklahoma calls it perfect for getting bait into deeper water in summer, and says to toss it out with a small float ahead of the baited hook and let the barrel weight drag the rig across the bottom. For catfish, see catfish rigs.
In winter, Oklahoma lists Carolina-rigged soft plastics among the options for bass holding on deep structure, alongside Texas-rigged, jighead, bass jig, bladed jig and drop-shot presentations. “Deep” is relative to the body of water.
One caveat on weight
Oklahoma says a traditional Carolina rig often calls for weight that is too heavy to show subtle bites or bites from smaller fish. Virginia’s panfish version runs 1/8 to 3/8 ounce.
